Preliminary topic: Echinococcus parasites: from correct identification to global phylogeography
Urmas Saarma is a Research Professor, leading the workgroup of mammalogy and zoonotic diseases at the Department of Zoology, Institute of Ecology and Earth Sciences, University of Tartu, Estonia. He received PhD in 1997 and is currently working with projects related to mammalian evolutionary ecology and zoonoses. Has supervised 11 PhD thesis and in 2019 received a National Science Award of Estonia for studies of mammals and their pathogens. Of zoonotic pathogens, his primary focus has been on Echinococcus tapeworms, their genetic identification, genetic diversity, phylogeny and phylogeography.
